Desert cliffs. Sea of Cortez. Adults-only luxury. Los Cabos is Mexico's premium alternative to Cancun — different landscape, different buyer, higher price point. Here's what Canadians actually need to know before booking.
🔍 Search Los Cabos PackagesLos Cabos is not a cheaper version of Cancun. It's a different product for a different traveller. Here's what that actually means when you're booking from Toronto.
Los Cabos packages from Toronto run CAD $300–600/person higher than equivalent Cancun packages. In May 2026, the entry all-inclusive at Los Cabos (Riu Santa Fe, 7 nights via Sunwing) starts at CAD $1,605/person. The equivalent Cancun entry (Flamingo Cancun) starts at CAD $1,245/person. The premium is real and consistent — not a fluke of timing.
What you get for that premium: a desert-meets-sea landscape that Cancun can't replicate, a much higher proportion of adults-only resorts, and significantly fewer budget-tier properties dragging down the overall quality floor. If you want a swimmable Caribbean ocean, Cancun wins. If you want dramatic Pacific scenery, upscale dining, and a more sophisticated resort atmosphere, Los Cabos wins.
| Factor | Los Cabos | Cancun |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price (7 nights, YYZ) | From CAD $1,605 | From CAD $1,245 |
| Ocean swimming | 🔴 Most beaches not swimmable (rip currents) | 🟢 Caribbean side generally swimmable |
| Landscape | Desert cliffs, Sea of Cortez, El Arco | Flat jungle, Hotel Zone strip |
| Adults-only options | Excellent — Marquis, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, Le Blanc, Paradisus Adults Only | Good, but fewer top-tier options |
| Budget-tier resorts | Fewer — quality floor is higher | More options but wider quality spread |
| Sargassum risk | 🟢 Pacific location — no sargassum | 🟡 Seasonal risk (June–Oct, varies) |
| Flight time from YYZ | ~5h 45m – 6h | ~4h 30m |
| GAC advisory (April 2026) | 🟡 High degree of caution (Baja CS not on avoid list) | 🟡 High degree of caution (not on avoid list) |
This is the single biggest thing Canadians don't know before they land. Los Cabos sits at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. The Pacific side — which includes most of the famous "corridor" beaches and Lover's Beach — has powerful rip currents and shore breaks that make ocean swimming dangerous year-round.
If swimming in the ocean is a priority for your trip, book a resort on or near Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas — not a corridor resort. The Riu Santa Fe, Breathless Cabo San Lucas, and Tesoro Los Cabos are all positioned on Medano Beach. Most corridor luxury resorts (Marquis, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, Esperanza) are spectacular properties but rely entirely on their pools for water access.
Los Cabos has a wide quality spread. Here's what the properties actually are, not what the brochure says.
San José del Cabo Corridor · Adults Only (18+) · All-Inclusive
Consistently the highest-rated adults-only all-inclusive in the corridor. Every room is oceanfront. Food quality stands out — multiple reviewers specifically cite it as the best AI food they've experienced in Mexico. Pool is unheated. 20–30 min from SJD airport.
Cabo San Lucas · Family-Friendly · All-Inclusive
Entry-level in the Los Cabos market at CAD $1,605/person (May 2026, 7 nights from YYZ). Located adjacent to Medano Beach — the most swimmable beach in Cabo. Family-friendly. Part of the Riu complex with access to Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas amenities.
Cabo San Lucas · All-Inclusive · Sea of Cortez
Long-standing Canadian favourite. Sea of Cortez location with beach access. Strong service reputation. Guests note the Cilantro restaurant as standout. The Pueblo Bonito brand has multiple Cabo properties — Rose, Blanco, Pacifica, Sunset Beach — check which one you're booking.
San José del Cabo · Adults Only · All-Inclusive
Marketed as "Los Cabos" but is actually in the Puerto Los Cabos marina area of San José del Cabo — a different zone with limited walkability to Cabo San Lucas attractions. Excellent golf. Not a beach resort. If you want downtown Cabo access, this isn't your property.
Cabo San Lucas · Adults Only · All-Inclusive · Ultra-Luxury
The top-tier adults-only luxury option in Cabo San Lucas. Smaller, more intimate property. Butler service, gourmet dining, adults-only beach. Price point is significantly higher — expect CAD $3,500+/person for 7 nights. For travellers who want Cancun's Le Blanc equivalent, this is it.
Cabo San Lucas · Adults Only · All-Inclusive
Marina Boardwalk location overlooking Medano Beach with easy walking access to downtown Cabo San Lucas, El Arco boat tours, and the marina strip. Adults-only. One of the few all-inclusive properties where you can leave the resort on foot and actually experience the town.
Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is located in San José del Cabo — not in Cabo San Lucas where most of the action is. This matters a lot when choosing your resort zone.
Unregistered taxi drivers at SJD are aggressive and routinely overcharge arriving tourists — especially from charter flights. Pre-booked private transfers through your tour operator (Sunwing Experiences, Air Transat transfers) or your resort are the reliable option. Always arrange transfers before arrival, not at the airport taxi stand.
The distinction matters: Canada's "Avoid Non-Essential Travel" regional list covers specific high-risk Mexican states. Baja California Sur — the state containing Los Cabos — is not on that list as of March 31, 2026. This is meaningfully different from the Level 3 advisory affecting Cuba or certain other states.
What "Exercise a High Degree of Caution" means practically for resort travellers: stay within resort and tourist zones, use pre-arranged transfers (not street taxis), avoid travelling after dark outside of known tourist areas, and be aware that crime — including opportunistic theft — can occur in tourist areas. This is the same baseline advice for Cancun, Punta Cana, and most Caribbean destinations.
