Every Friday evening, the fishing village of Oistins on the south coast becomes the island's best outdoor dining experience. Fresh mahi-mahi, flying fish (the national dish), Banks beer, live soca music, and local families — not a tourist construction. Cost: CAD $15-25 for a full plate. Hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles congregate at Paynes Bay on the west coast year-round. The resort's complimentary snorkel gear won't get you to the turtle feeding zone — you need a short boat excursion from the beach. Viewing distance: 1-3 metres. The resort experience (turtles swim to the surface at feeding stations) is authentic, not staged — the turtles arrive independently. Harrison's Cave in the island's interior is Barbados's most significant natural attraction — a network of underground crystallised limestone caverns with stalactites, flowing streams, and a waterfall. Tram tour, 35 minutes. Cost: CAD $35-45 per person. Distance from Platinum Coast: 25 minutes. Most all-inclusive guests never leave the resort on a short trip. The ones who spend one afternoon at Harrison's Cave universally say it was the highlight of the trip.
Mount Gay is the world's oldest rum distillery, established in Barbados in 1703. The Bridgetown visitor centre offers guided tours with tastings for approximately CAD $25-35 per person. Foursquare Rum Distillery in St. Philip is a craft alternative with an excellent tasting room and on-site rum bar. Both are 30-40 minutes from the Platinum Coast. For clients who enjoy rum, this is a half-day excursion we include as standard. The island's rum culture is genuine — not a manufactured tourist product.
